چکیده

Spermatozoa occupy several days in their passage through the cpididymal canal (Mason and Shaver, '52). During this time the spermatozoa acquire increased fertilizing power (Young, '31). These facts suggest that the epididymal cells and their secretory products may play a dual role. First, they may actively participate in the differentiation of the sperm cells ; secondly, they must contribute to the well-being of the spermatozoa by making available nutrients or otherwise maintaining a compatible environment. Few attempts have been made to study the enzymatic characteristics of these epididymal cells by modern histochemical methods. Wislocki ( '49) has investigated alkaline phosphatase in the epididymis of the Virginia deer, Maneely ( ' 5 5 ) has described the distribution of alkaline phosphatase and certain polysaccharides in the epididymis of the rat, and Iwahashi ( ' 5 2 ) has studied the localization of acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase in the epididymis of the lizard. No other studies of a complete nature have been carried out histochemically on this tissue although several incidental observations appear in the literature (e.g., Chessick, '53 ; Fishman and Baker, '56 ; Montagna, '52 : Nicander, '54).

A chemical and histochemical study of acid phosphatase in the epididymis of normal, castrate and hormone replaced castrate mice.

Chemical and histochemical studies have demonstrated a striking complexity of organization in the epididymal canal of the mouse (Allen and Slater, ' 57 ) . Alkaline phosphatase arid aliesterase were present in significantly different amounts (or activities) in the head, and body and tail of the epididymis. Marked lobal variation was observed in the activities of these enzymes in the head segmen...

Protective effects of Cornus Mas fruit extract on methotrexate-induced alterations in mice testicular tissue: Evidences for histochemical and histomorphometrical changes in an animal model study

Methotrexate (MTX) as a chemotherapeutic agent, has adverse effects on reproductive organs by enhancing oxidative stress. In this study, the protective effects of Cornus mas fruit extract (CMFE) against MTX side effects were evaluated. Forty-eight mature male NMRI mice were divided into six groups: group 1 (control) received 0.10 mL per day of normal saline intraperitoneally (IP), grou...

Evaluation of Alkaline Phosphatase Activity Alteration in Mouse Endometrium After Ovarian Hyperstimulation During Early, Pseudo and Natural Pregnancy Until Implantation Time

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity of uterus after ovarian induction using pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in normal and pseudopregnancy during implantation periods. Materials and Methods: For this purpose, 240 female NMRI mice with the age of 6-10 weeks were selected and divided into control an...

Comparing the Expression Levels of Alkaline Phosphatase, Gfra1, Lin28, and Sall4 Genes in Embryonic Stem Cells, Spermatogonial Stem Cells, and Embryonic Stem-Like Cells in Mice

Background and purpose: Spermatogenesis is a well-organized process that is influenced by a variety of factors. Alkaline phosphatase, and Gfra1, Lin28, and Sall4 genes are among the key players in this interconnected process. This study aimed to investigate the expression levels of Gfra1, Lin28, and Sall4 genes in embryonic, spermatogonial, and embryonic stem-like (ES-like) cells in mice. Mate...

The Effect of Estrogen on Cartilage and Bone in Castrate C3H Mice †

The contrasting effects of estrogen upon the pubic symphysis and long bones in mice is well known.'0 `` "' At the time new bone was forming in the long bones the number of reticular fibers increased in the marrow.' Because observations were made only after 30 days following implantation of estrone, it was not possible to determine whether these fibers were associated with the formation of new t...
